Archbishop Andrew Choi of Kwangju, in
an apparent excess of his own authority, attempted on January 24, 2008, to
declare "automatic excommunication" of those who participate in celebrations in
the Chapel or Blessed Mother's Mountain in Naju, applying the decree not only to
those in his own diocese but to Catholics anywhere in the world. The Archbishop
also unjustly expelled Fr. Aloysius Chang from the archdiocese. We await the
Vatican's reply regarding the validity of this astonishing decree.
