Chapter 58. The pain of coughing severely accompanied by hemoptysis. (October 21, 1982)

There were so many customers coming to my beauty parlor that they usually had to wait two to three hours for their turns despite my working there without any break. Some of them who were busy went back but most waited for a long time until I did their hair. I had begun to cough severely after praying for the lady with tuberculosis, but never thought of going to see the doctor. It was not because I wanted to earn more money but because I could not turn away those customers who had taken time off to come to me.

Nearer to Korean Thanksgiving day, my cough aggravated to the point where I coughed up blood. At first I ignored it, thinking that I only coughed up blood because my bronchi had weakened due to my continued cough. Despite that, I still did the customers’ hair by turning my every deed of the haircut into a prayer, which made me very happy. Every time I came to cough hard against my will while shaping a customer’s hair with a dryer, I would ask her to hold the dryer for a moment, running out of the beauty parlor. On the street I crouched down and coughed for quite a while, grasping my chest tightly. Then blood would come out of my throat.

It had been two weeks since I coughed that hard. Furthermore I had almost stayed up every night because of the cough, which made me fear the nights. In the end I made up my mind to go see the doctor, because I felt that I owed an apology to my customers for troubling them with my cough. One day, after work, I went to a clinic with my husband. The physician said, “Your disease is now so critical that I cannot even take an emergency measure. Make haste to go to the emergency room of Gwangju Christian Hospital. The hospital is best at curing lung diseases in the nearby area.”

My husband who was startled urged me to go to that hospital, but I refused to go there. Instead I told him I would go home. After returning home, I said to him, “Please pray for me.” He replied, “I haven't received the gift of healing.” I said to him again, “Is there any person who has been destined to receive the gift of healing? I think healing occurs when we pray with love.” We prayed for about one hour holding each other’s hand.

Then I heard the kind voice of the Lord. “Yes, that’s it. What can be more powerful than love? Become like Me by making more efforts to live a consistent life of love.” I stopped coughing since then.
